NC Iowa | Ummmmm what? You're kidding right? You don't compact soil fines together if it's dry.....so if you want this "compaction of fines" one would think you'd have to go roll when the field is wet.....and who wants to do that? Nobody.
We are one of the only farms in our area that does not roll their beans. I had some issues combining this year and told dad if we did roll, all I'd want is one pass around the entire border of each field.
I saw rill erosion everywhere this year in rolled fields. Not just from the road but from spraying a few for a neighbor.
I can't even imagine how farmers ever survived combining fields that weren't rolled back in the day.....
Speaking of erosion, I've probably gained 1,000 lbs of top soil in my front yard from the field around me, as have all the ditches in my area. Let me guess, if guys had rolled their ripped fields this fall, no erosion? HAHAHAHA | |
