Ah, ok I'm on the same page as you now.

My main N program is about 1/3 up front with the planter 2 x 2 and whatever is on the dry spread.....and the balance 2/3 put on via NH3.

I have not seen the tie up you are talking about....but that may be a here vs there. I agree, the microbes need to be fed. But there is still so much we do not know about how the soil N ebbs and flows.

I guess I am not all that worried about getting the rye consumed so fast. Part of the reason I let my covers get thick is....I want that fodder there to shelter the soil, and to feed the worms throughout the summer. When I killed my covers before planting, by July the soil was bare again.

I also notice, that this year, where my corn was short from all the rain, the fields I had heavy covers in kept the weeds back much better than my straight no-tilled fields. The fodder was acting like a heavy mulch, suppressing the weeds.
