So is the option to quit fertilizing crops? Some of the vegetables use huge amounts of fertilizer such as nitrogen on lettuce.

I often wonder if farmers cut the amount of fertilizer by half for 3 years, what these people would gripe about. I say three years because it will take at least this much time to get the buildup of nutrients to show a yield decline. This is my experience watching an organic transitional experiment.
