Near-north Ontario, French River | As a small child I remember Mikhail Gorbachev, then an Ag Minister for Russia visited our farm as part of a Russian delegation that was touring the area. My uncle had known Eugene Whelan, at the time Ag Minister for Canada, when Gorby visited Canada he wanted to see the country side , one of those stops just happened to be at our place. I didn't meet him myself and the visit was short but it's our 30 seconds of fame LOL... I believe that it was during this trip that Gorby and Eugene, in a private conversations in Eugene back yard that the idea of Glasnost was born. Not many years after Gorby came to power in Russia, and the rest as they say is history. |
