central Iowa
A family named Bunker homesteaded the farm I grew up on. Was granted to them for the man fighting in the Civil War. Not sure if he was killed in it or what, but story
talks about his wife and several sons. They were kinda horse thieves. Some horses were stolen, and a posse caught up/suprised them in Independence. On the way back,
one escaped, and sped off on horseback. The posse rigged the remaining guy with a noose around his neck, with a tied back sapling, that would hang him if he messed with it.
Story goes that they caught the other one, but when they returned, the one was hanging from the sapling. They thought the only thing to do was hang the other one !
Earlier, also, they came up with a get rich idea to start their own town on their farm. they had streets and lots platted out and named the town Bunker Hill City. Nothing ever came about as far as development. The plat is recorded at the
courthouse here in Eldora. Didn't discover this whole story till a few years ago. -Oh, the mother and other sons left the area after all that. Pretty exciting for this area.
