Would getting an older vehicle that is cheap to buy and already has a pile of miles be a good solution for both parties?

Wife can still run the wheels off it and keep doing what she wants, and you wont see money going down the drain in mileage overages.

A 2K-4K Pontiac Grand Prix 4 door sedan with the 3800 v-6 can reach 300K miles fairly reliably, and has 4 doors for the kids.

Or, get a minivan. The embarrassment will keep the miles down! :)

We had a car like that prior to this and every time there was a little hiccup I got screamed at

That is unfortunate. :(

If this is your life, and she won't go to counseling, and won't get a job either, you probably have bigger problems. She might not want to talk to a counselor and have 2 people tell her simultaneously that she needs to be responsible. Having 2 older paid for vehicles, for when 1 has a problem is less expensive than 1 with payments higher insurance, taxes, licence etc
