Got a few thoughts.

First off quality pigs always got a home, but....???

Last spring we looked at buying shares in a farrowing unit , our share would have about 400 sows, possibly 800 sows.

What is a farrowing unit share worth that the oldest buildings are almost 30 years old, all the way up to gilt multiplier that was less than 8 months old, and updated state of Art filtration system and security.

4 years ago they were lucky to achieve 22p/s/y, brought in a new management service, For a year they were at 28p/s/y, and the monthly reports were looking to get them over 29.

Pig cost was somewhere in the high 30's. Would have to find more finishing space.

What to do, what to do?

The custom finishing thing has been hashed over on here quite a bit, so I'll leave that be.

Two packing plants are being built in Iowa, barns that a year ago wouldn't get a second look, got guys stopping by to see if a guy would be interested in finishing pigs for them.

Know a couple guys that had their finishing contracts up for renewal last year, negotiations weren't going well, you know the old typicall, "we'll sign you up for a 2 dollar a pig space less contract, but you are going to have to change out the feeders".

Then all of a sudden, don't have to change out feeders and gave them dollar a pig space raise, what the heck???

Just kinda rambling, more questions than answers..
