Floyd County, Iowa | We usually give a memorial in a sympathy card if we are close to the deceased's family.
When my Dad passed, we had quite a bit of memorials, we thought.
With part of that memorial money we bought some framed artwork for the hospital, to be placed on the walls of the patient hallways, in our parents' memory. Those walls needed something calming, so there are paintings of African elephants (Dad's favorite) hinging there now.
The rest went to the town's Military Memorial Committee (they performed military rites at veteran's funerals). Dad was a veteran of Korea, past Commander and Quartermaster of the local VFW and a member of the honor squad. The leader of the MMC told us that they always needed flags for the cemeteries for Memorial Day and for military funerals, so that's what the rest of the memorial money went toward.
When we sent the thank-you's out, we included a note in them telling what the memorial money went toward.
