You know the things is, any business goes through a growing phase but when they see they are in a mature market they either, do a wider sweep with marketing open in an area where they haven't had a presence before, or they simply cut back production to create a hunger for their product. We as farmers have never operated that way, we simply ramp up production to make up for a lower price. The culling that our industry goes through has been going on for decades beginning with the egg laying industry dairy industry, hog industry, and beef. Is it all that far fetched to think what we need is fewer farmers running more and more land at a much smaller margin? exactly what it means to be an integrated pork producer today? It saddens me that ultimately it may get to that point, and when that happens the idea of an idealistic farm place where a man raises his family on the land and his kids return to keep the farm in the family, will be but a memory.
