a very good old-time driller here would lay his open pocket knife on his index finger-extended. When the knife fell off, he drilled. Claimed to never miss. On a neighboring farm, a new owner had him come to drill a well, he found an artesian well 30 ft behind the house. The old farmer had been too tight with his money to pay for such service, always carried water from a spring
