Marion, Ohio
Yes the old root channels very well could aid in new roots finding their way down to the tile. I believe there's so many variables that will increase or decrease the ability of roots to effect tile. Tile depth, subsoil densities, early or late planting of cover, rainfall, maturity of cover before termination, compaction layers etc. Covers are really gaining interest as time goes by and I think theres gonna be a management learning process with drainage systems. Me personally I don't like letting cereal rye making it to straw, id rather have it planted thicker to gain root mass and terminate earlier.
