Somebody around here planted cover crops in their drown out spots in their bean field after last summers rain and this spring they had to replace all the tile because roots plugged it up. I'm not sure if it was rye but it was some type of cover crop.

Read this twice. Just wondering why it didn't occur to them to dig up the tile to determine why the crop drowned out before planting covers? It would be pretty easy for me to believe the tile was already plugged, not knowing anything else about the situation......

I have ground that has tile every 90 feet and with a big rain with runoff it can and will drown out. Tile can't help enough when this is a lot of surface water.

Again, I don't know the whole story here. BUT, I still think there may have been a chance that the tile might have already been plugged. I don't know that for a fact. Thats the very first thing that gets looked at "here" if a crop is lost to water, but our tile are much closer than 90 feet.
