You can just pull a harrow behind and with all the grain the JD's throw over it will be re-seeded for next year.

But seriously, we have fires all the time on our combines in sunflower season. The excitement and panic has wore off long ago. Carry a water extinguisher as well as a chemical one and you are safe. As mentioned above, keep the chaff off the infector lines, keep any leaks fixed, and blow off the LH side of the combine everyday as this is where sparks from the manifold will land and smolder in every nook and cranny.

9610 is not too bad, but our CTS is alot dustier and will be smoldering daily during sunflower harvest. Usually on top of the rotors inside is where it starts. Luckily we can have them pulled out in under 5 minutes to get at it. We put some inspection holes in certain places so we can put a garden hose inside and flood the bugger.

Sunflower season will be very early this year, expect more fires than usual.

When I worked in AUS , when doing chickpeas the combines were lit up all the time. With temps as high as 35C / 100F everyday it was interesting. Actually had flames coming out of the feeder house on a beat up L2 I was driving. Should never have put it out, that combine had done it's time and deserved to be put out to pasture.

Claas were the worst, was already on fire at 7:30 in the morning once. Too many shields and nooks and crannies.

Back to Whippers original question, we've never had a problem around the driveshaft.

And make sure your insurance coverage is upto snuff.

Have a safe harvest
