Nebraska Panhandle
Ran a lot of numbers last winter which is what prompted us to change our operation and part of that was cutting fed hay and decreasing sickness. Health is not as easy to maintain in a drylot with calves. Labor and depreciation of facilities and equipment is a cost that most don't accurately figure into their budget. I will admit that extremely high calf prices made it break even with our new program of spending more time grazing but if prices move much it no longer makes sense. Avoiding fed hay also gives us some flexibility when we have a dry spell and feed prices go through the roof.
