Yes it is that sort of "hedge" but like anything else we would all be a fool to place our trust in any one item to allocate everything too or trust anyone that thinks they know what will actually happen. All one can do is to prepare for as many possible outcomes and scenarios as they can. That is why a mix of many tangible items is also a good idea instead of putting all the eggs in one basket. Other items are also in this same class of diversifying and protecting ones wealth. 

Sorry if this sounds like I'm talking in riddles and obscure references. There are many things that will remain unspoken especially on a public forum.
