I was referencing current information from Cattle-Fax on clients that keep complete records with all expenses included, not 30 year old USDA data.
The average price paid on spring born calves for the last 10 years is $135.25 on steers (USDA). Most folks around here sell calves off the cow at 550-625#. In hindsight, I probably didn't discount the heifers enough so I'll amend that to $700-800.

I never said profits have been fine, all I said is that I don't agree that lack of profitability is the major reason for the reduction in beef production for the last 10 years. Maybe it should have been, but I find most cow/calf producers are so committed to their operations they will only sell cows when they have to.
