I like the way you worded your question. We work stalks on a budget as well, on 180 to 220 bu corn. We combine with an 843 head. I think shredding the stalks improves the results. If the stalks can set a while after you cut them before tillage I think they settle down, flatten out some and cover better. In addition to shredding on COC I run the disc over them prior to disc/ripping with a 510 JD. Some people don't like a 510, however it is way better than what I used before and I'm pretty happy with the job. I certainly can't justify the latest and greatest for only 500 acres of stalks.
