Suing would be a bad idea. Probably sending a bill was a bad idea too but that is done. Your best bet is to go to the board meeting and explain the situation and ask they celebrate in a different way next year.
Focus on the animals fear injury and suffering, not on the monetary aspect. If you talk $$ you are just a greedy bastard. If you talk humanitarian you are a great guy.
