There are quite a few energy from waste plants here in the UK, there's one just down the road from here. Almost all of the landfill site are full, so we're now burning waste.

The emissions are closely monitored, so the air is relatively clean still and I think, bu will happily stand corrected that they can recover about 90% of the energy used in manufacturing when they burn it and produce electricity from the heat.



In the US, garbage incinerator ash is handled as a category of hazardous waste, which means it’s extremely expensive to landfill compared to normal sanitary waste. Most incinerators were shut down here by the mid-1990s. Europe still uses them full bore though as they are less strict on ash disposal.
