Those vehicles are about as inefficient as you can get for converting fuel into electrical energy. No doubt they can help out in an emergency situation by serving as a small backup generator, but they are only good for couple of 15 amp circuits. All that fuel would be better spent dumping it into a dedicated fuel powered generating plant.

A good way to combat this disaster from happening again, would be to wire homes where they could be automatically switched to only run essential curcuits... basically lowering the demand. But our current society seems to never support actions or policies that cut waste to meet an objective.
