Last I checked, the majority of large electric utilities are private companies. You don’t have to be a customer of theirs. If you disagree with their operation policies you can disconnect.
You have a lot to learn if you think private utility companies are strictly private. Have been more than one involved in pay to play schemes with politicians to allow them to hose their electric customers. Currently have a big pay to play scheme that got busted between Common Wealth Edison and power broker Democrats in ILL
I’m surprised how many folks are calling for more regulation in these threads, that’s unusual for AgTalk.
They’re legally required to deliver to their shareholders before their customers, just like every other publicly traded company. It’s a for-profit enterprise that can charge what the market will pay, not a co-op or charity. Their operation plans for situations like in Texas right now balance cost and the statistical likelihood of it occurring. No different than an automaker balancing the cost of a recall against the total cost of the statistically likely wrongful death lawsuits from a defect.
