Always a good idea to build in redundancy when dealing with things that can hurt when they don't work as originally planned. Several back up options may be expensive at first but they come in handy during emergencies. I would hope energy policy wonks will take this into account when thinking about national security issues. Steak and ethanol - built in redundancy for our corn market. I do believe wind and solar are great for producing energy and should definitely be encouraged.
