I have an older 8" westfield that got sluggish on lowering. I oiled the pulleys in the cable system and did a lot of messing around one day with it. It would lower but slow as molasses. Whatever I did (or didn't do) seemed to help, I haven't had issues with it since. I really don't know what helped the situation. Did you find anything that helped or that might prevent such a predicament for future reference?
That old westfield is the smoothest running auger I think I have ever encountered. It's more quiet and smooth empty than most are full.
