The best way was to plant a round or two crossways in the spring.  However, I'd be in the same boat with you and have to shell it crossways.  Put the points of the snouts just under the ears and you'll generally get most of it but I'm anal so I'll comb back through it when I'm going with the rows.  I'll smile when I see the rare ear actually get picked up and pretend I didn't lose a single one.
