I like good deals too. Dad torched off every other flute on his last set of jd knife rolls. If I was to do it, this time I'd cut the first three inches off of every other one and make sure to do it on the corresponding ones on the other roll. Calmer puts a tapered leading edge on the flutes that have the window.

The window really allows the stalks to get grabbed right away and not get pushed by the roll so they're not bunching up and feed evenly.

Yes, I know some guys have had bad luck with their 40 series cluster gears. We (knock on wood) haven't so far. We ran calmer bt crushers on our head for at least 10 years. Now the choppers for 3 years. We replaced two gear boxes while running the crushers. Our issue was the single roll pin on the 40 series. We had them break, then the roll wore the shaft.
