I took one class of computer programming in '64-'65, studying Fortran IV.  We used punch cards, I don't recall if we actually got to see "the computer".  Computer "time" was critical in those days - if we through the computer into an unplanned loop it was automatic failure of the class.

I just dug out the punch cards from class projects - the rubber bands are shot but the cards look as good as new.  There is a printout there also.
