Very common in eastern Ohio where we have extremely variable soils. I always recommended two with a projected 1-3 days difference in tasseling to extend pollen shed.
It is a defensive tactic.
In some of the better soil to our west, I'm finding many blending varieties of soybeans for the same purpose. If that works, why not corn?
