Subject: Can I go back to eating lots of carbs?

Pittsburg, Kansas
I have only been doing this for about a year and researching it actively now for maybe 14 months. I'm no expert, I'm no doctor, I'm no health professional. So no way can I give anyone advice. But what I can do is relate my experience, what I personally do, any results and what resources I have found valuable. It will be up to others to interpret any of that information to see if it applies or would be beneficial to themselves.

I may be able some day to go up to as high as 100 grams carbs, IF I get myself metabolically healthy. My estimate at this time (completely unscientific) is I'm half way to being metabolically healthy. I may never advance any further than what I am now. If so I may be stuck with 25-50 grams carbs for the rest of my life. Which I could do very handily. I'm not sure at this point I even want to increase my carbs "some day", as the meals and lifestyle are very satisfying as it is. A little more flexibility would be nice in social situations though.

Right now my fasting blood glucose is 120-130 usually, still higher than I want it to be. My after meals is great and and sometimes no higher than my fasting. If I get down to around 100 fasting it will be an indication to me I am in better shape. My A1c went from 7.0 to 5.7, still slightly in the range of pre-daibetic. So I still have some insulin resistance, though it is much improved (based on once in a great while having a higher sugar/carb load and how my blood glucose responds - kind of a self glucose tolerance test).

So for me, and my wife that is still losing weight, it will be very low carb for probably at least another year. It took nearly 37 years to get in such bad shape, taking a couple to reverse it is not all that bad in my opinion. I can never go back to eating 300-500 grams carbs a day like myself and many Americans did/do or I will be right back where I started before the diet change. Diabetic, on insulin and a half dozen prescription drugs, fat and sick.

As far as diving, about a little over 200 dives per year for the past 5 years (since we have been semi retired) is about the most I have done. Last year only 150 something because rather than a summer diving vacation we drove around Alaska for a month and were gone 2 months on the whole trip. So that cut into the diving. To date from Dec. 6 when we got here, I've logged 118 dives with about 121 hours under water. We will be here till mid March and then 6 weeks in Indonesia diving so I am hoping to top 250 dives for the calendar year. That will be a personal high. God willing and the health holds out. About 14 months ago I had given up the idea of going to Indonesia. I thought we had waited too late. My knees were hurting carrying tanks and gear and wife and I just thought our health was deteriorating.

Then we changed diet and dietary lifestyle. Got our lives back. Booked the trip to Indonesia (Sulawesi, specifically Bunaken Island and Lembeh Island). Did I say we got our lives back???? With diet change???

The only time I dive fresh water lakes (Missouri and Oklahoma) now is if my grandsons want me to go with them, which is not very often (because they are broke all the time).

Changing our diet not only changed our health, it also changed our outlook on what we could do in life.

Watch everything you can in the "low carb down under" series on youtube. That will lead you to a whole host of doctors and specialists in the field and you can follow up with more research with the doctors you like.

With your past medical make sure your doctor is monitoring your progress. If you are on medications they likely will have to be lowered in dosage or de-prescribed. Doctors are trained to prescribe medicines. From what I have heard from the on line doctors they were never instructed how to take people off medicines. I went from 100 units of insulin to zero in two weeks, with half rate in the middle. Had I not fully inderstood how to adjust my dosage to my needs I likely would have become hypoglycemic and maybe into a coma or died. Prescription drugs are powerful things and drastic diet change can affect the way they act on the body. Do things wisely and consult your doctor.

None of this is medical advice. Consult your medical professional. Don't do what I am doing. I don't know what the hell I am doing. Do your own research and make your own decisions about your life. I only "discusss". I do NOT advise.

Hope this helps.

John
