Schlegel Farms, Hagerstown Indiana | I saw that show about a month ago, I agree it is worth the time spent to watch. It's hard to believe what those people lived thru.
I asked my mother (she's 97) if she remembered the "Dust Bowl". She said she did, said that here in eastern Indiana it was nothing like what they suffered in the plain states, but there were problems. Anytime you hung out the laundry, it was dirty again by evening, also there was always a layer of dust on the house floor and furniture. She remarked that it seemed like the wind blew all the time. Grit in her teeth is what she remembered as bothering here the most.
I ask if she knew what was causing the problems and if it was called a "Dust Bowl" back then. She said that they knew of the dust storms via the radio, and that about half way through it the term "Dust Bowl" was coined.
