Sunflower State
My Grandma shared this story when I asked about the dust bowl. She was a 4th grader at Marienthal KS Catholic School. She said it started getting dark and the kids were scared as their school was next to the prairie and they thought a fire was coming. They all went to the church and waited there with the priest. Finally parents came and took all the kids home. When dark came folks in the town gathered together in various homes and prayed all night for the dirt to stop blowing. Said everywhere there was dirt. Hung wet towels from windows, sealed up doors the best they could and put wet rags over their mouths every time the dirt came. She said they faired well during that time as her dad ran the local grocery store and was the post master. Others not so well.

She also tells of the rabbit drives. Girls were not allowed to be involved in such events but she does remember big groups of men rounding up/hearding rabbits then clubbing them or whatever.
