central mo | It could be a faulty bios that is simply not telling the CPU fan to even turn on when it senses excessive heat from the CPU. I've experienced this with an old Dell D600 that I had purchases used. The fan worked fine. But the bios wouldn't communicate to it correctly to turn it on. The machine would run fine for like 2 or 3 minutes ... sometimes less ... problem was that it was just getting too hot and would shut itself off before damage was done.
To fix the problem I used my wifes hair dryer. I pointed the blower (cool air only) into one of the air vents on the machine and just let it run. I went to dell's support and download site, got the necessary BIOS update for the machine, installed it and its been great ever since.
If that process had not worked I was going to suspect what one of the others has already said ... that it was a faulty motherboard componant ... capacitor/solder/whatever ... and have the whole motherboard replaced. | |
