From your description that sounds like it could be one of a few things (not a complete list but a start):
1)battery bad - if plugged in and still happens not it
2)overheating component - i.e. cpu/gpu/ram - if happens after long idle period likely not it
3)faulty motherboard component - i.e. capacitor/soldered junction etc... - I had one mobo that would boot up into windows and last seconds/minutes/hours then shutdown, sometimes would hang during boot, sometimes wouldn't even boot, turned out I had one capacitor that sprayed it's guts allover the case door causing irregular things as mentioned
4)infection of somesort but seeing as how you reformatted and started over, this would only apply if the viral body had copied itself to your backup data and/or disks

anyhow that's a start, probably more computer savvy could add more and perhaps some solutions
