Contact HP support.  A friend and his wife both have HP laptops.  Both have been acting various kinds of flaky.  He installed some upgrades on his that appear to hae fixed the problem.  Hers is acting more as you described and required sending to HP for an upgrade of some kind.

It is entirely possible it IS your computer!
