Subject: RE: Angus heifers “beating” calf instinct

Northern Minnesota

I hate when that happens!

One version is the cow that licks the newborn calf normally but every time the calf attempts to stand the cow nails it aggressively with its head.

I had a bunch of lovely Retail Product heifers that calved that way.  (Totally agree about EXT, and he was on the maternal side of that bull.)  Some repeated that behavior for a year or two but eventually grew out of it.

In my book, there is absolutely nothing good about a beef cow that abuses it's calf....for whatever reason.  (Unless the slaughter cow market is strong and your short on cash!)
