Subject: Angus heifers “beating” calf instinct

SC ND
Have been calving out black angus heifers for a few years now (switching from Herefords for numerous reasons). Seems like I always get a few heifers that are very aggressive to their calf immediately after birth. Why is that? Some straighten out after a little while, but some just will not let that calf get up. I realize birth is a traumatic event, but what instinct is triggered to continually butt them to the ground. It’s not that she doesn’t want him cause she’ll lick him off and ball for him. Seems once the calf sucks (assisted of course), they settle in. I’ve even had one continue to do it as a second calver.
