Subject: RE: JD 15 ft. mower specs + a PTO question.

The early Power-Shift 3020 and 4020 tractors had too much PTO brake capacity and there were modification programs to correct the problem. Many tractors, of course, were never modified. 20,30 and 40 series PS tractors use a 4 gear system to transfer power from the crankshaft level to the PTO shaft level. The 20 series had the brake position on the third gear down. Brake and piston all one piece. The brake was locked to the clutch housing with one pin and when it sheared off the piston rotating in the bore ate the housing up. When the front PTO shaft left with the 20 series the brake was moved to the bottom gear and changed in design. The brake plate is retained and floats on 3 pins. The piston is a separate part and is in a bore in front of the brake plate. Your 4040 uses 3 gears and the rest of the drive train common to the 4240 and 4440 tractors. Only the PTO output gear and shaft assembly comming out of the front clutch pack are different from bigger brothers. Also have used JD 1508, Rhino FL 20 and JD CX 20 hours and hours behind 4040 and 4240 PS tractors and have not had PTO clutch or brake problems. Any other questions, just ask. Hope this helps.
