W Texas | I'm going to disagree to a certain extent with a lot of the advice here. You have to ask yourself if you are in cattle to make money or to impress your friends?
In certain situations, the cheapest cows CAN be the best deal.
If you are in a drought area, broken mouth cows are often going CHEAP at the sale barn. I've seen bred cows going for so cheap that they barely paid for the hauling and auction fees. Buy thin cows that are palpated bred and you can put weight on the cow and she will be worth more at weaning than you paid, just as a cull for slaughter. You get a free calf for your troubles. This is a time honored formula for making money in cattle. It isn't for everyone, because a lot of people don't have the patience to keep grass in reserve during a drought. Also, a lot of people don't want to be known as dealing with broken mouth cattle.
