NC Indiana | We started with a couple sale barn breds - some unknown, some the farmer was cutting numbers to start retiring. We ended up buying the rest of the guy retiring's herd the next year, and have retained several heifers from those cows - the last of which is due to retire this cull cycle (at least 14 yrs old). I would look for someone retiring and buy their middle to better cows. If I'm selling because of lack of feed, the first to go will be trouble makers and opens/late breeder/late calvers, then we're getting into cows I really don't want to sell yet because they are getting it done on their own and make me money (this is the bunch of cows I would want from a "I don't have enough feed" deal). Some guys just sell all the cows and keep heifers when feed is tight because they take less feed. Late calvers could be alright for starters, but I don't know that I would want to keep heifers from them (why are they late?). | |
