Was that a static phase convertor or was it a rotary phase convertor? Static convertors are usually designed for one motor only, rotary convertors can run multiple motors. Have seen a lot of grain setups where they had big rotary phase convertors that ran multiple big motors. Have never run VFDs, but that is supposed to work as well, too. Neighbor has a welding shop with big press brakes/shears/etc and he ran it for a long time using big phase convertors to run everything including several big welders. He had 3ph brought in because he was getting equipment with newer CNC controls. Neighbor wanted to do it then, too, but the cost was very high and he would have had to share the initial cost of bringing it in for several miles. He waited about 10 years and connected up this year, only had to pay the cost of running the lines from the welding shop to his shop.
