north central Iowa, Hampton | when we got married, our family raised hogs and I did most of the grinding. Figured cooking couldn't be a lot worse--gotta be done every day, follow the instructions and keep everything sorta balanced. It seems its worked out ok. I still do the majority of our cooking--but no hogs anymore.
One of the best tools I have was a Fanny Farmer cookbook given me by my wife. It's been a reference guide anytime I want to try something new. Kind of like having a Chilton's manual handy when tearing into a car.
Lately I've been wondering how I could help others learn that "scratch-made" stuff is cheaper, better for you and doesn't take *that* much more time than the store-bought kits. My kids are all competent in the kitchen, so there's hope.
