To me it is counter intuitive that a layer on the surface that would stop water from going up would let water come down. Breaking the capillary bridge to the surface, while allowing surface infiltration, is an interesting idea. (How else does your subsoil get recharged?
Gravity is a lot stronger than upward capillary action. Out soil holds 2" of moisture per ft. When we get rain, anything that soaks in goes in the "bank" and can be drawn on later.
Usually after a crop is taken off the bank account is empty. And may take several months and several rain events to fill back up. |
