The Far East...of Nebraska. | I would never argue about the impracticality of summerfallow due to economics...on paper it makes sense to go continuous. The whole return on assets thinking makes it hard to sit ground, when crop insurance can guarantee at least some sort of revenue.
Makes it very hard to rent ground and sunmerfallow it, you’re asking the owner or yourself to put money in with no guarantee of a bigger payday at the end.
However, farming isn’t just done on paper. And if a guy wants to grow good wheat in nw ks fallow is one way to do it. Right now it appears to be Continous dryland corn country, and it they keep getting moisture I don’t see that changing. If a guy survived the 30’s fallowing, the next gen survived the 80’s fallowing, I suspect they’ll find a way to survive low prices by fallowing. Chem fallowing too expensive? Bring back the sweeps. |
