Garden City Ks | No the idea is to keep residue on the top of soil to reduce wind erosion, water erosion and increase water infiltration. Summerfallow to my knowledge was developed before government programs and was only really for dry areas. As our knowledge and technology increase, Summerfallow is necessary in fewer areas. Also popular is a Wheat Milo Fallow rotation 2 crops in 3 years instead of one every other year. This reduces fallow acres. It’s not a guarantee if you can’t catch a rain in or near planting time you might have a full soil profile of moisture but the top 6 inches are bone dry you can’t get emergence. I’ve seen a month of heat and winds dry out what once looked like a promising start to a wheat crop. In my area we receive around 17” of rainfall. So we have more weed pressure than areas with lower rainfall and higher elevations. | |
