| Gostate, eddiedry, the last few guys point out what the first bunch did not. HP and gears are only just two pieces of the pie. The wrong axle ratio can spoil a decent high HP engine with lotsa gears, or the right axle ratio can make a lower HP truck with 10 gears very suitable. In general, the guys in MN/IA seem to like the 4.10 or 3.73 gears. Anything lower than that better be 450 HP or more. The total of all 3 factors will be what makes you happy or hoppin' mad at the end of the trip. Ideally we'd all have 400+ HP, 13 speeds, and 4.10's IMO. The salesmen will tell you that these trucks are the trucks that sell FAST. Lower power, fewer gears, or lesser ratios will all bring a class 8 truck into question if it's a farmer asking what'll work or not. Hills, valleys, flat earth, or interstates, all of 'em be danged, the entire drivetrain has to work as a team. | |
