Subject: Re: semi HP question

Southwest Illinois
That would be an OK setup for a single axle tractor and short trailer. The L10 is best in operations needing less than 300hp and not a lot of torque. It would be light but you would be dissapointed in its ability to climb even slight grades and out of soft fields. HP is not everything you need to look for. Remember there is no replacement for displacement. We have an M11 set at 400 and an older 855 set at 300. The M11 is a 10 speed the 855 a 9 speed. The only time I'd rather have the M11 is when the scales are out and if we are running on flat ground. The M11 is good on the road, but if it gets a bit hilly or you have stop and go traffic the 855 is much easier to get around. Both good engines, but each has its strength. For farm use the 855/N14 or the 12.7 detroit(i think) are hard to beat. Cat engines are good, but parts and service will cost more.
