We ran a deere air drill over several thousand acres a few falls ago "banding" p and k for corn and beans. It didnt work too bad, but biggest thing we wanted was to place it deeper than the air seeder could go. And yes we thought there was more maintenance issues and mud issues than it was worth as a dedicated fert tool. If you already had one for planting small grains or beans that would be different.

Goose how deep can you band it with a drill? We have a 1690 CCS... Did you go every 30" and try to plant on strip?
