Kankakee, IL | I have been growing my own rye seed for years and often find it to be the most profitable acres on my farm. No need to plant rye on your top acres either, find some of the bad stuff where you more than likely lose money.....sand hills or odd areas with alot of turning on them. My 2017 crop averaged 41.5 bu/acre. Cost per bushel was $1.58. This included the cost of frost seeding clover on some of the acres and an August cover crop mix on the rest. Locally, bagged rye seed is selling for $15+ per bushel. I sold some of my excess seed for $10.50/bu uncleaned or $11.50 cleaned. Corn is coming out this year at 200+ bushels per acre so corn would have been more profitable, but not by much. It is far more normal for these acres to yield 150 bushels. | |
