Southeast WI
First off it's hard to say a whole lot without being there observing through the year.

One thing I make sure is I have a good 45-50 units of N on with planter along with 8-9 units of sulfur from ATS. Here I also put down 20 units of sulfur in fall as elemental with potash. Early N right off the row a few inches is important. We sidedressed the rest and this year we had the same N defic as you with similar N rates but our problem was lots of rain through mid June and then 13" June 20-july 20.

I'll be harvesting my replicated plots in a few weeks but after 5 years I have not seen an issue with yield. However rye is killed between 6-12" here except planted green this year and killed at 18" because of cont rain. How tall was your rye when you killed it??? This can have a large negative effect on yield and most just gloss over that fact BECAUSE THEY DON'T TEST FOR YIELD. I applaud you for leaving some check strips.
