NW Central Ohio | ....I'd say it's another issue. Your cultivated beans had what some refer to as a "dirt mulch". Once you break the surface of the soil up...the water won't wick through the tilled soil. It's kind of like fitting ground right before a rain. If it's going to be a big rain where you need evaporation to get it dried out before planting it...cultivating it will keep is soft an extra day or two. If it's a light rain...you're just as far ahead to fit it..because it won't soften the deeper soil, and it will dry off just as fast.
