De Forest, WI | Cultivate on a schedule if possible until crop establishment. Get the weeds in the white thread stage. They are MUCH easier to control.
Don't cultivate when rain is expected within 12 hours h less the field is a mess, you will be doing it again as soon as you can get back in.
If you can't tear a weed out, cover it up. Same effect.
If you crop is not 100% up and the ground has crusted, rotary hoe and don't look back.
For us go over planted corn crop 5-7 days after planting with a spike tooth harrow on a shallow angle on a hot day and don't look back. This will usually provide very effective in row control of weeds until the crop is tall enough to throw some dirt in the row.
Buy several cultivators. Have them set perfectly for the crops and stages of growth. Once set properly don't mess with the position of shovels, sweeps, etc. it is much easier and a stress relieve to just hookup and go and have everything set properly.
Those are a few. I am sure I will think of more. | |
